How to Feed your Cairn Terrier
a Fresh, Raw Diet

raw_pupOur diet is adapted for Cairn Terriers from "Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats" by Kymythy Schultz (www.HayHouse.com or 800-654-5126). When your puppy “goes home” it will be on these foods. You can make a week’s worth at a time or fix food daily.

BREAKFAST: 1 tbsp safflower, canola or olive oil, small raw egg, 200 mg vitamin E, 500 mg vitamin C, 1 tbsp ground flax seed – refrigerate after grinding – or flax seed oil, ½ tsp cod liver oil, ½ tsp kelp, ¼ cup raw naturally raised meat or fish or a portion of chicken back or a neck, ¼ cup whole milk yogurt (like Stoneyfields).

DINNER: ¼ cup raw, naturally raised meat of fish, dab of finely chopped dark, dense vegetables, 1 tbsp bone meal if no bone in meat, oil if meat does not contain fat. Puppies love chicken or turkey hearts or pieces of deer heart.

SNACKS: A growing pup may need a chicken neck at lunchtime or in the evening. I use fruit or white cheese for treats. NEVER GIVE GRAIN PRODUCTS!

  • Dogs get much of their energy from fat. A typical meal should contain 20% or thereabouts fat.
  • You should be able to see the pup’s rib structure but not the individual ribs.
  • Chicken and turkey backs and necks contain the ideal ratio of bone to meat. Naturally grown or organic poultry generally is not too fatty. If the pup gains too much weight, pull some of the fat off and substitute it for the breakfast oil or save it in the freezer for growth spurts.
  • skeeterEven young pups love bones. Venison bones are wonderful! Beef knucklebones should be sawn into puppy-sized pieces. Beef shinbones are of little value…the marrow is soon gone and the bone is too hard for the pup’s teeth to impact.
  • Canned mackerel works in a pinch.
  • As the puppy grows increase the amount of food. Chunk meat rather than grind it. A teaspoon-size piece of liver once or twice a week is a good addition.
  • If a pup leaves food or refuses an item, you can be sure it’s not needed at the particular time. Try again in a week or so. Puppies love variety. They like herbs and seasonings. Spaghetti sauce is a special favorite.
  • Get bone meat and kelp from RevivalAnimal.com 800-786-4751. All my dogs get a dropper or two of colloidal silver (40ppm) daily – and I take it myself. CS kills bacteria, viruses and fungus. If you don’t make it yourself, it’s cheapest from Revival in the 16 oz bottle.
